雖然頂著上屆美洲盃亞軍頭銜，巴拉圭卻已不是那支昔日擁有黃金世代的南美強隊，如今除了面臨換血與傷痛的雙重危機，巴拉圭在今年美洲盃更需突破進球荒，光靠日漸老化的防線，恐怕很難重演上屆奇蹟。

曾在1953、1979年奪下美洲盃冠軍的巴拉圭，隊史真正輝煌時代卻在1996到2010年期間，當時連4屆闖進世界盃，更在2010年南非世界盃拿到隊史最佳第8，可惜從此開始走下坡，甚至上屆世界盃資格賽淪落墊底出局慘況。

但在上屆美洲盃，巴拉圭上演驚奇之旅，受到2010年1月傳奇球星卡巴納斯頭部遭槍擊，仍能奇蹟生還事件激勵，先在小組賽連3場踢和驚險晉級，隨後連兩場PK大戰氣走巴西與委內瑞拉，爆冷闖進決賽才以0比3輸給烏拉圭。

隨著4年時間過去，如今巴拉圭想要再靠防守創造奇蹟，幾乎接近不可能任務，上屆美洲盃最佳守門員比拉將滿38歲，後防主力達席爾瓦也35歲了，兩人體能無法跟4年前相提並論，更何況巴拉圭還有頭痛的傷兵問題。

除了效力土耳其超聯特拉布宗的前鋒卡杜素、荷甲阿爾克馬爾的中場C.歐提茲兩大旅外好手缺陣，莫雷拉、法布洛、H.培瑞茲等主力也無法打今年美洲盃，造成巴拉圭不管進攻或防守，都不能拿出他們最佳戰力。

去年接掌巴拉圭國家隊兵符的阿根廷籍教練拉蒙迪亞斯，只能努力整合這支狀況連連隊伍，過去10場國際友誼賽，巴拉圭只贏2場，今年兩戰更慘，先以0比0跟哥斯大黎加踢和，接著0比1輸墨西哥，代表他們今年還沒進過球。

保有巴拉圭隊史最多進球紀錄（30顆）的33歲前鋒聖塔克魯茲（見圖，美聯社），將是他們所剩不多的進攻選擇之一，可惜面臨和阿根廷、烏拉圭兩大強敵同屬B組命運，巴拉圭只能全力拚倒牙買加，才有晉級8強機會。
